While cities all over the world continue to develop ways to deter, prevent and mitigate terrorist attacks, there is a growing concern among professionals and public administrators on how architecture, urban design and planning might help improving safety in the urban environment while keeping acceptable levels of quality in the overall urban experience.
Starting from the assumption that “fencing in”, though inevitable as an immediate response, cannot be seriously taken as a long term solution, questions arise on whether it is possible to implement early stage “designed in” solutions as part of the urban regeneration/design process.
Besides the deployment of TVCC and slickly designed short term defensive elements such as bollards, concrete blocks or landscape features, applying prevention in the long term by facing far too common and widespread issues of deprivation, social exclusion, diversity and ghettoization while planning intervention within the urban fabric might be worthy of deeper analysis and experimentation.
